For road bikes take away 9 inches from the total of your inseam. This is to account for the size of tires you will use on a road bike. The tires on a mountain bike are not the same as a road bike. You will find them to be much bigger and designed to handle rocky terrain. It is important that you allow adequate room between you and the crossbar. When you choose your bike, adjust the seat up a few inches from the crossbar and then sit on the bike. Sit on it and make sure you can rest your feet flat to the ground. Which bike you get will greatly alter the clearance you will require. As an example, with a touring bike you will only require around 1". However for a mountain bike you will need 3" between the crossbar and yourself. Do you want to ride your bicycle every day or do you see yourself only riding it once in a while? Which height of bike is the most comfortable fit for you?
